HOFHR WILL

WE will examine how people are affected by the information society and the technologi

we use to understand the development of democracy and the meaning og human rights

in the information society, and try to produce knowledge about our examination.

Wikinomics

What is "Wikinomics"? In the last few years, traditional collaboration—in a meeting room, a conference call, even a convention center—has been superceded by collaborations on an astronomical scale. Today, encyclopedias, jetliners, operating systems, mutual funds, and many other items are being created by teams numbering in the thousands or even millions. While some leaders fear the heaving growth of these massive online communities, Wikinomics explains how to prosper in a world where new communications technologies are democratizing the creation of value. Anyone who wants to understand the major forces revolutionizing business today should consider Wikinomics their survival kit. Find out more >>

And it works. 77% of players involved significantly change their lives forever.

THE EMERGENCE OF A GLOBAL INFRASTRUCTURE FOR MASS REGISTRATION AND SURVEILLANCE

Global security and the “war on terror” now dominate the global political agenda.

Driven largely by the United States, a growing web of anti-terrorism and security

measures are being adopted by nations around the world. This new “security”

paradigm is being used to roll back freedom and increase police powers in order to

exercise increasing control over individuals and populations.

HRW

Human Rights Watch is dedicated to

protecting the human rights of people around the world.

We stand with victims and activists to prevent discrimination,

to uphold political freedom, to protect people from inhumane conduct in wartime,

and to bring offenders to justice.

We investigate and expose human rights violations and hold abusers accountable.

We challenge governments and those who hold power to end abusive practices and

respect international human rights law.

We enlist the public and the international community to support

the cause of human rights for all.

Human Rights Watch is an independent, nongovernmental organization,

supported by contributions from private individuals and foundations worldwide.

It accepts no government funds, directly or indirectly. Contribute today

has welcomed proposals by several countries

to help create a tsunami

alert system for the Indian Ocean,

similar to the one established by

UNESCO to protect the countries of the Pacific.

“The Organization stands ready,” the Director General said, “

to share the expertise and know-how gained in the Pacific

to set up a similar network in the Indian Ocean,

and other major risk areas such as the Caribbean,

Southwest Pacific and Mediterranean.”

UN Human Rights

About OHCHR

The United Nations vision is of a world in which the human rights of

all are fully respected

and enjoyed in conditions of global peace. The High Commissioner

works to keep that vision

to the forefront through constant encouragement of the

international community and its member States

to uphold universally agreed human rights standards.

It is our role to alert Governments and the world community

to the daily reality that these standards are

too often ignored or unfulfilled, and to be a voice for the victims

of human rights violations everywhere.

It is also our role to press the international community to take

the steps that can prevent violations,

including support for the right to development

Childrens rights

UNICEF’s mission is to advocate for the protection of children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. UNICEF is guided in doing this by the provisions and principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Built on varied legal systems and cultural traditions, the Convention is a universally agreed set of non-negotiable standards and obligations. These basic standards—also called human rights—set minimum entitlements and freedoms that should be respected by governments. They are founded on respect for the dignity and worth of each individual, regardless of race, colour, gender, language, religion, opinions, origins, wealth, birth status or ability and therefore apply to every human being everywhere. With these rights comes the obligation on both governments and individuals not to infringe on the parallel rights of others. These standards are both interdependent and indivisible; we cannot ensure some rights withoutor at the expense ofother rights.

A legally binding instrument

The Convention on the Rights of the Child is the first legally binding international instrument to incorporate the full range of human rightscivil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. In 1989, world leaders decided that children needed a special convention just for them because people under 18 years old often need special care and protection that adults do not. The leaders also wanted to make sure that the world recognized that children have human rights too.

The Convention sets out these rights in 54 articles and two Optional Protocols. It spells out the basic human rights that children everywhere have: the right to survival; to develop to the fullest; to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life. The four core principles of the Convention are non-discrimination; devotion to the best interests of the child; the right to life, survival and development; and respect for the views of the child. Every right spelled out in the Convention is inherent to the human dignity and harmonious development of every child. The Convention protects children's rights by setting standards in health care; education; and legal, civil and social services.

By agreeing to undertake the obligations of the Convention (by ratifying or acceding to it), national governments have committed themselves to protecting and ensuring children's rights and they have agreed to hold themselves accountable for this commitment before the international community. States parties to the Convention are obliged to develop and undertake all actions and policies in the light of the best interests of the child.

Corruption

Why a Global Programme against Corruption?

The greatest impact of corruption is on the poor – those least able to absorb its costs.

By illegally diverting state funds corruption undercuts services, such as health, education,

public transportation or local policing, that those with few resources are dependent upon.

Petty corruption provides additional costs for citizens –

not only are service provision inadequate, but ‘payment’ is required for the delivery of

even the most basic government activity, such as the issuing of official documentation.

In many countries, applicants for drivers' licences, building permits and other routine

documents have learned to expect a "surcharge" from civil servants. At a higher level,

larger sums are paid for public contracts, marketing rights or to sidestep inspections and red tape.

However, the consequences of corruption are more pervasive and profound than these bribes suggest.

Corruption causes reduced investment or even disinvestment, with many long-term effects,

including social polarization, lack of respect for human rights,

undemocratic practices and diversion of funds intended for development and essential services.
